How Browser-Based Background Removal Works (and When to Use It)
For studio-style ID photos with a clean, solid-colour background (white, light-blue, light-grey, red), threshold-based colour knockout produces excellent results in milliseconds — no AI model, no server upload, no API cost. This tool uses that approach. For complex outdoor portraits, you may need a dedicated ML solution; ours is purpose-built for the 90% case Indian operators see at the counter.
How it works
You click a pixel that represents the background. The tool computes its RGB value and removes (or whitens) every pixel within your selected colour-distance tolerance. Edge feathering smooths the boundary between subject and removed area.
Best practices
- Capture against a smooth, well-lit background.
- Avoid shadows on the wall — they vary the colour and confuse the threshold.
- Click the background pixel closest to the subject’s outline — this samples the most representative shade.
- Start with tolerance 40 and increase to 60–80 if patches of bg remain.
FAQs
Does this work for outdoor selfies?
It works for moderately-clean backgrounds. For complex outdoor scenes, an AI-powered remover (which would require uploading the photo) gives better results. We’re evaluating a WebAssembly ML model for a future release.
Is the photo uploaded anywhere?
Never. All pixel operations happen in your browser.

Common Errors and Fixes (12)
- Patches of BG remain. Increase tolerance gradually.
- Subject edges look cut. Add edge feather 2–3.
- Hair detail lost. Reduce tolerance, increase feather.
- Eye whites turned transparent. Different shade than BG. Click on the actual BG pixel only.
- Glasses lens transparent. Lens has BG showing through. Manually preserve in source first.
- Shadow under chin removed. Acceptable for ID photos. Adjust if needed.
- Output looks jagged. Source was low-res. Get a sharper source.
- Output PNG huge file size. Pass through Image Resizer after.
- White BG output looks grey. Auto-whiten not engaged. Toggle output to White.
- Sample colour shifts after click. Different brightness regions. Sample mid-light areas.
- Transparent PNG has black halo. Pre-multiplied alpha issue. Try saving as White then mask externally.
- Won’t load HEIC photos. Browser limitation on older iPhones. Convert to JPG first.
