The renamer guide
How to Bulk-Rename Hundreds of Scan Files for Schools, Colleges and CSC Centers
A school principal drops 220 admission photo files onto your counter, all named IMG_20260112_141233.jpg. You need them named ADM-001.jpg through ADM-220.jpg before uploading to a portal. This tool does that in one click.
Common patterns
- ROLL-{n:4} — rolls into ROLL-0001, ROLL-0002, etc.
- AADHAAR-{name} — keeps the original name with a prefix.
- BANK-{date}-{n} — date + counter (e.g. BANK-2026-01-20-1.jpg).
FAQs
Are files uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The ZIP is generated client-side with JSZip.
Maximum number of files?
Tested up to 1,000 files. Larger sets may slow down older mobile browsers.
Real Use Cases — The Boring Tool That Saves Hours
Bulk renaming is the unsexy back-office work that quietly consumes 30% of a cyber cafe’s admission-season time. Here are 6 scenarios where this tool earns its keep:
The school admission batch (220 photos)
Pratiksha tai in Solapur, July admission week, principal drops 220 student photos all named IMG_20240712_141233.jpg. Portal demands ADMN-2024-001.jpg through ADMN-2024-220.jpg. Old method: Pratiksha would rename one-by-one in Windows Explorer, taking 90 minutes. New method: pattern ADMN-2024-{n:3}, hit Process, download ZIP. 8 seconds total. She charges ₹1.50 per file = ₹330 for 8 seconds of work.
The bank KYC bulk
Imran bhai handles a CSP (Customer Service Point) for a small bank. Monthly KYC batches need files renamed by account number. He uses pattern KYC-{name} after pre-sorting files by account number. ZIP delivered to bank manager via courier. ₹2 per file × 600 files monthly = ₹1,200 standing revenue.
The scholarship document organiser
MahaDBT requires documents named 10THMARKSHEET.jpg, 12THMARKSHEET.jpg, CASTECERT.jpg etc. with specific case. Sandeep sir uses pattern {name}-renamed after pre-renaming sub-batches.
The court e-filing
Lawyers need annexures named ANNEX-A.pdf, ANNEX-B.pdf... in alphabetical order. Drop, custom pattern, deliver.
The wedding card photo organiser
Wedding photographer customer comes back with 1,400 photos. Cyber cafe pre-renames them by event sequence (SANGEET-001.jpg, HALDI-001.jpg etc.) before customer takes them home. Charges ₹500 for the full batch service.
The medical claim packet
Insurance claim photos need to be numbered chronologically. Drop, pattern CLAIM-{date}-{n}.jpg, ZIP, attach to email.
Pattern Token Reference
| Token | What it produces | Example |
|---|---|---|
{n} | Counter (no padding) | 1, 2, 3 ... 10, 11 |
{n:3} | Counter zero-padded to 3 digits | 001, 002, 003 |
{n:4} | Counter zero-padded to 4 digits | 0001, 0002 |
{name} | Original filename without extension | IMG_20240712_141233 |
{ext} | Original file extension | jpg, png, pdf |
{date} | Today (YYYY-MM-DD) | 2026-01-20 |
Combine tokens freely: STUDENT-{date}-{n:3}-{name} → STUDENT-2026-01-20-001-IMG_20240712_141233.jpg
Common Mistakes & Fixes
- Files sorted alphabetically by phone name, not chronologically. Pre-sort by date in your file explorer before drop.
- ZIP download empty. Pop-up blocker. Allow downloads.
- Extensions changed unexpectedly. Keep Extension toggle set to Yes.
- Counter restarts mid-batch. Browser tab reloaded. Avoid refresh during processing.
- Original filename has special characters that break the pattern. Use {n} only, skip {name}.
- Duplicate filenames after rename. Increase counter padding (e.g. {n:4} for 1000+ files).
- Tool slow on 1000+ files. Split into batches of 250–500 on mobile.
- Date token shows wrong timezone. Browser locale issue. Set system time correctly.
