The PDF size guide
How to Compress Any PDF Below 100 KB / 500 KB — Without Uploading It Anywhere
Government portals in India love arbitrary file size limits. PM Kisan: under 1 MB. MahaDBT: under 500 KB. CSC Aadhaar verification: under 100 KB. The same PDF that opens fine on your laptop gets silently rejected on the portal with a generic “file too large” error. This compressor solves that — entirely inside your browser using pdf-lib.
1. How the compression works
PDF files are mostly made of embedded JPG images plus text streams. Our tool walks the PDF tree, extracts each JPG, re-encodes it at progressively lower quality until the total file size falls under your target. Text, vector graphics, fonts and metadata are preserved exactly — only raster images get re-compressed.
If the source PDF has no embedded JPG (pure-text PDF), there’s nothing to compress — we’ll show a notice and skip.
2. Workflow
- Drop the PDF onto the upload card. The tool reads it locally.
- Pick a preset target (100 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB) or enter a custom KB value.
- Choose a quality lower bound. Aggressive goes down to 0.40 JPEG quality (smaller but visible loss). Balanced stops at 0.55 (recommended). Gentle stops at 0.70 (largest output).
- Click Compress & Download. The output appears in your Downloads folder.

Suresh bhai in Aurangabad: PMAY housing scheme application week, 12 customers needed documents under 1 MB each. Old way: re-scan each at lower resolution, re-stitch via JPG to PDF. New way: drop, pick preset, download. 8 seconds per file. ₹100 per family = ₹1,200 in 90 minutes.
Pratiksha tai in Solapur: Aadhaar PDF for CSC fingerprint match needs under 100 KB. Customers consistently bring 3–5 MB PDFs from various scanners. Drop, “Aadhaar PDF” preset, done. 6–8 jobs daily, ₹15 each.
5. Privacy & limits
100% browser-local. The PDF never leaves your device. We don’t see your file, your data, or your customer’s information. Tested up to 50 MB source PDFs on mid-range laptops.
